Our politicians are constrained. By the media, by corporate and institutional backers, by factions within their own parties, but most of all by their desire to win the next election. Every decision is made with one eye on the ratings, the media, and what donors and campaign focus groups say.
But what can be done? How can democracy be freed so it is responsive to the needs and concerns of the people it is meant to serve? Can democracy be of the people, by the people, for the people?
Yes, it can. Decision-making assemblies full of randomly selected ordinary people already exist and are becoming more and more common. They are comprised of people just like you and me: a representative sample of people deliberating together, free from the constraints of today’s politicians. And they work, they come to legitimate decisions that people trust.
Let's make democracy serve the people, with a democracy using sortition.
