International Sortition Network — Launch Event

This is the launch of regular, recurring events aimed at establishing and progressing an international network of democracy activists campaigning for the use of sortition.

About this Event

All around the world, democracy is undergoing a process of rejuvenation: citizens' assemblies, people's panels, and others types of deliberative mini-publics with citizens selected by lot are being convened. These demonstrate how everyday people from all walks of life can make decisions, shape policies, and give politicians a mandate for change that has the interests of wider society at heart.

Date And Time

Saturday, February 13th, 2021

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM CET

Who is this for?

This event will bring together activists and campaigners working on sortition and similar methods around the world. Anyone with a basic understanding of deliberative mini-publics and with an interest in making these more widely used is welcome to attend.

What to expect?

This event will provide opportunity to

  • learn about campaigns for democratic lotteries around the world,
  • network with others who believe in the use of sortition, and
  • hear about ongoing projects and opportunities for collaboration.

Our first event will present campaign work done by the Sortition Foundation in Scotland, and will include a presentation by our campaign manager James Robertson.

Following on from this initial launch event, for future events we plan to invite contributions from other campaigners, advocates, and movements around the world to discuss their campaign strategies.
