Scotland House of Citizens campaign launch

Sortition Foundation is leading the call with Electoral Reform Society, the RSA and Common Weal for a House of Citizens in Scotland. A ‘House of Citizens’ was a key recommendation in the report of the Citizens’ Assembly on the future of Scotland published in December, 2020.  We are excited about the prospect of a citizen-led second chamber for Scotland, improving accountability and hardwiring deliberation into the Scottish Parliament.

The campaign launch saw the release of our video, already attracting many thousands of views with the petition also gaining thousands of signatories. The video tells the story of Pauline, a participant in a citizen panel on climate change in Aberdeenshire.

Since the start of the campaign we have seen commitments from the Scottish National Party and the Scottish Greens to solidify the work of citizens’ assemblies within Scotland, and look forward to working with parties across the political spectrum to see a citizen-led second chamber become a reality.
